Harry Kane considers NFL kicking alongside future MLS career

Harry Kane has revealed he could combine a future career in Major League Soccer with his long-held ambition of becoming an NFL kicker.

The England captain said he would consider the possibility more seriously in the coming years, although he remains focused on continuing his football career for as long as possible.

Speaking to reporters at England’s training camp on Wednesday, Kane said his interest in kicking in the NFL remained a realistic possibility.

“That is something I will try and look at a bit more seriously,” Kane said, via The Athletic, as reported by NBC Sports. “It all depends on what happens in my career over the next five or six years, the motivation and what I want to do. The NFL is a lot more realistic than the golf one, let’s put it that way.”

Kane, who has previously spoken about his desire to try professional golf, said a move to Major League Soccer could potentially allow him to pursue both football and American football.

“Maybe if I am in the MLS in the future or somewhere like that it might be a thing where you could connect the two, with the seasons,” he said.

The 33-year-old also explained why he believes his experience taking football penalties could help him transition to NFL place-kicking.

“I take penalties and it is a very similar pressure and technique,” Kane said. “If I did that, in terms of training, I would be closer to that more than to any other sport. But as I know, with all elite sports, when you watch it on TV, people make it look easy, and you think it is possible, but that is not always the case.”

Kane said he would approach the challenge seriously if he eventually decided to pursue it.

“If I was to do it, it is something I would take seriously. I would take six months to a year to try and practice before,” he said.

Kane has repeatedly spoken about his interest in the NFL and has previously expressed admiration for the sport.

For now, however, he said his priority remained football.

“I want to play as long as I can here,” Kane said, referring to his current football career.

NFL kicking

PUNCH Online reports that NFL kicking is the part of American football where a specialist player, known as a kicker, uses his foot to score points by sending the ball through the goalposts.

Kickers mainly attempt field goals, which are worth three points, and extra points, which are normally worth one point after a touchdown, while they also take kickoffs to start each half and after scores.

For Harry Kane, the interest is specifically in becoming an NFL kicker, a role that could draw on his experience taking penalties in football.

Kane has said he could potentially pursue NFL kicking while playing in Major League Soccer (MLS) in the future.
