IGI Airport waterlogged, flights affected as rain lashes Delhi
Commuters wade through flooded underpasses near the airport to reach on time; Palam receives heaviest rainfall in city — 72.2 mm in 3 hours; waterlogging, traffic snarls reported across Capital
Heavy afternoon showers led to waterlogging in many parts of the city and disrupted traffic movement.
At the Indira Gandhi International (IGI) Airport, passengers were seen wading through stagnant water, even as commuters were seen navigating through flooded underpasses near the airport to reach on time. The downpour also caused flight delays and diversions.
“Delhi Airport witnessed heavy rainfall this afternoon; as a result, the approach road and forecourt areas experienced water accumulation. The accumulated water was cleared within some time,” read a post from the Delhi airport’s official X handle.
In a subsequent release, the airport operator stated, “The inclement weather also impacted flight operations, which led to the delays and diversion of some flights. Our on-ground teams are diligently working with all stakeholders to ensure a seamless and efficient passenger experience.”
A Public Works Department official said, “We deployed pumps to clear out floodwaters. The catchment area of the underpass [near Terminal 1] is big, and due to flooding in Mehrampur, waterlogging was reported in the tunnel, which was cleared later.”
As per the India Meteorological Department, Palam received 72.2 mm of rainfall in the three hours between 2.30 p.m. and 5.30 p.m., the highest among the city’s weather stations, followed by 34.6 mm at Lodhi Road, 32.6 mm at Safdarjung (Delhi’s representative weather station), 20 mm at the Ridge and 12 mm at Ayanagar.
Waterlogging and traffic snarls were reported from Sadar Bazar, Kamla Nagar, ITO, Mahipalpur, Dwarka, Subroto Park, Saket, Hamdard, Patparganj and C.P.
