Mitch McConnell, the former Republican Senate majority leader who returned to work this week after a months‑long absence, had to be prompted by colleagues as to how to vote near the start of a televised meeting of the Senate agriculture committee on Wednesday. Video of the moment shows that when McConnell’s name was called by the clerk, in a procedural vote on the farm bill, he initially did not respond. As colleagues and aides scrambled to help the 84-year-old, the senior Democrat on the panel, Amy Klobuchar, could be seen mouthing the word “aye” in McConnell’s direction.

A moment later, as the clerk called his name again, the Republican committee chair, John Boozman, leaned in McConnell’s direction and audibly prompted him to say “aye”. “Aye,” McConnell said in a raspy voice from his wheelchair.
