Two doctors face prosecution over Mazonakis’s death as investigations uncover new evidence

Two doctors are facing a felony prosecution over the death of singer Giorgos Mazonakis , as police and judicial investigations continue and new evidence emerges from the case file.

The doctors, who requested and received an extension to provide explanations on Monday 14 September, are facing charges of fatal exposure to danger after Mazonakis suffered cardiac arrest at their clinic in Kolonaki on Wednesday, 9 September.

Lawyer Charalambos Lykoudis, who represents the singer’s family, told ANT1’s main news bulletin that the case file does not contain videos showing Mazonakis’s arrival at the clinic or photographs from the plasma exchange procedure. However, he said there was no doubt that the singer arrived at the clinic before 2 pm, based on the testimony of the taxi driver who transported him.

According to Lykoudis, Mazonakis remained unconscious at the clinic on Karneadou Street for around one and a half hours before an ambulance was called. He also claimed that the case file indicated an attempt had been made to delete all client records from the clinic.

Contradictions under investigation

According to reports, investigators are examining contradictions in the statements given by the two doctors and other witnesses.

One of the doctors reportedly said Mazonakis arrived at the clinic at 4 pm, while other witnesses working at the clinic gave different accounts.

The duration of Mazonakis’s stay in the treatment area is also being examined. The doctor reportedly said he remained there for a very short period because the machine had not yet started operating, while the clinic secretary said he had been in the treatment area for at least 45 minutes.

Investigators are also examining statements regarding the doctors’ medical specialties and the licences covering the clinic’s operations and services.

A further issue under examination concerns the use of a defibrillator. The doctor reportedly said that one of the physicians attempted defibrillation without success, while the EKAB emergency service crew said the clinic’s defibrillator was not functioning.

Digital evidence and medical equipment examined

Greek police investigators are examining electronic devices seized from the clinic, as well as two plasma exchange machines found on the premises.

Investigators are seeking access to the machines’ digital data and memory to determine when they were activated and whether the medical procedure was underway when Mazonakis became unwell.

They are also examining data relating to other clients and whether any information may have been deleted from the machines.

Information cited in reports also suggests that investigators are looking into whether tubing from the machine had been cleaned. Police sources said that even in such a case, biological traces and genetic material could potentially still be identified.

The doctors reportedly claimed that the machines had been disclosed to the Athens Medical Association, one in 2025 and the other in 2026.

CCTV footage under review

Security officials are also searching for additional CCTV footage from cameras not only at the clinic but also in the surrounding area to examine Mazonakis’s movements before his visit.

Footage from a camera at the entrance of the building reportedly shows Mazonakis entering the clinic at around 1 pm rather than 4 pm, as one of the doctors had allegedly claimed.

Investigators are also examining seized digital files from the clinic to establish whether similar procedures had been carried out on other patients in the past.

Family seeks upgrade of charges

The singer’s family has argued through their lawyer that Mazonakis’s death is linked to medical procedures carried out at the clinic.

Lykoudis has said that, based on the available forensic data, there was no indication of a pre-existing heart condition and that the family intends to seek an upgrade of the charge to homicide with possible intent.

The family has also requested the seizure and examination of the machines, including checks for fingerprints and other evidence, as well as access to phone records, the recording of the emergency call to EKAB and the patient’s medical file.

Cause of death remains undetermined

The post-mortem examination carried out by two forensic experts, in the presence of a technical adviser appointed by the family, did not determine the cause of death.

According to the available findings, the cause of death remains undetermined because no evidence was found that could definitively explain what caused the cardiac arrest.

Answers are now expected from toxicological and histological tests, with samples already sent to specialist laboratories.
