PDP dissolves party’s state executive in Kano

The National Working Committee (NWC) of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has dissolved the entire Kano State Working Committee (SWC) of the party, including the State Chairman, Dr Bello Gambo Bichi.

The dissolution, which took immediate effect, was contained in a letter dated Thursday, September 24, 2026, and signed by the PDP National Organising Secretary, Hon. Umar M. Bature.

The letter, addressed to the Kano State PDP chairman and titled “Dissolution of PDP State Working Committee, Kano State,” said the decision followed consultations by the party’s National Working Committee.

It stated: “The entire PDP State Working Committee (SWC) for Kano State, chaired by Dr Bello Gambo Bichi, is hereby DISSOLVED with effect from the date of this letter.”

The national leadership, however, clarified that the dissolution was limited to the State Working Committee, stressing that the party’s Ward and Local Government Area (LGA) executives remained unaffected.

“This dissolution affects the State Working Committee ONLY. The Ward and LGA Working Committees are NOT AFFECTED by this dissolution,” the letter stated.

The NWC further directed that the North-West Caretaker Committee would take charge of the affairs of the Kano State chapter pending the election of a new State Working Committee.

Reacting to his removal, Bichi said he accepted the decision as a sacrifice for the reconciliation and strengthening of the PDP in Kano State.

He linked the dissolution to the conditions reportedly attached to the decision to replace former PDP governorship candidate Dalhatu with Muhammad Abacha as the party’s candidate.

Bichi said Dalhatu had also sacrificed his candidacy in the interest of the party and that he agreed to the dissolution of his State Executive as part of the conditions for the reconciliation.

“When we agreed to reconcile PDP in Kano and bring Muhammad Abacha to replace our candidate, because we believe he is more powerful to go for the seat, Dalhatu gave out some conditions, including dissolving my State Executive, which I agreed to as a sacrifice,” Bichi said.

He further said the new Electoral Act required certain procedures to be followed when changes were made within a political party, including obtaining written consent from the person being replaced.

The latest development is expected to usher in a new phase of leadership within the Kano PDP as the party prepares to constitute a fresh State Working Committee.
