NSE ends nearly 2% higher in market debut; becomes world's 7th most valuable exchange

New Delhi: National Stock Exchange of India shares closed nearly 2 per cent higher in their market debut on Thursday, valuing the bourse at Rs 4.49 lakh crore and placing it among the world's top seven exchanges. The stock listed at Rs 1,800, marginally up by 0.84 per cent from the issue price of Rs 1,785 on the BSE. During the trade, shares surged 5.21 per cent to Rs 1,878 before closing at Rs 1,818, higher by 1.85 per cent.

The stock listed at Rs 1,800, marginally up by 0.84 per cent from the issue price of Rs 1,785 on the BSE. During the trade, shares surged 5.21 per cent to Rs 1,878 before closing at Rs 1,818, higher by 1.85 per cent.

NSE commanded a market valuation of Rs 4,49,955 crore and ranked 11th among the most valued firms on BSE.

Reliance Industries is the country's most valued firm with a market valuation of Rs 16,49,616.47 crore, followed by HDFC Bank Rs 11,24,571.19 crore, Bharti Airtel Rs 11,17,673.74 crore, ICICI Bank Rs 9,56,171.08 crore, SBI Rs 9,03,230.53 crore, TCS Rs 7,51,476.78 crore, Bajaj Finance Rs 6,12,104.96 crore, Larsen & Toubro Rs 5,29,031.62 crore, LIC Rs 5,13,589.81 crore and Hindustan Unilever 4,54,175.99 crore, as per BSE data.

Earlier in the day, NSE entered the elite club of top 10 valued firms by market valuation, grabbing the tenth place ahead of Hindustan Unilever. However, at close, Hindustan Unilever raced ahead of NSE in terms of market cap (mcap).

Peer BSE has a market valuation of Rs 1.29 lakh crore.

NSE also became the world's seventh most valuable exchange by mcap.

United States' CME Group has a market valuation of USD 97.37 billion, followed by Intercontinental Exchange whose market cap was USD 87.77 billion, Hong Kong Exchanges & Clearing USD 63.40 billion, Germany's Deutsche Börse USD 58.09 billion, Nasdaq USD 53.34 billion, London Stock Exchange USD 52.89 billion, NSE USD 46.87 billion, United States' Cboe Global Markets USD 28.07 billion, Singapore Exchange USD 18.75 billion and Netherlands Euronext USD 18.12 billion.

The Rs 22,569-crore initial public offering of NSE, the country's second-largest IPO, received nearly 6 times subscription on the final day of bidding on Monday, led by strong demand from institutional buyers.

The offering was India's second-largest public issue after Hyundai Motor India's Rs 27,870-crore IPO in 2024. The IPO surpassed LIC's Rs 21,000 crore offering in 2022.

The public issue marked a significant milestone for the NSE, whose listing plans had remained stalled for nearly a decade amid regulatory hurdles, including those linked to the co-location controversy.

The mega IPO generated nearly Rs 90,300 crore of demand against the Rs 22,568 crore issue size.

The IPO had an Offer for Sale (OFS) of up to 12.64 crore equity shares by existing shareholders.

The exchange had fixed a price band of Rs 1,700-1,785 per equity share for the IPO.

NSE was incorporated in 1992 and recognised as a stock exchange by SEBI in April 1993. It commenced operations in 1994 with the launch of the wholesale debt market, followed shortly after by the launch of the cash market segment.
