'BJP is turning police into weapon to evade accountability': Rahul Gandhi on BPSC exam row

New Delhi: Leader of Opposition in Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi on Wednesday came out in support of protesting students who faced police action in Bihar, saying what they want is accountability and questions do not stop with batons.

He said students of Bihar have a "very straightforward question" on why there are irregularities in recruitment exams, why no action on allegations of paper leaks and how long will this "tampering with the future of the youth" continue.

"The controversy over BPSC exams is not of today. Students have been on the streets for a long time over the recruitment process, exam pattern, delays, and transparency. But instead of answering, what is the government doing? It's wielding batons and water cannons. It's taking students into custody. In Siwan, there was even firing with an AK 47 on protesters," he said on X.

"This is not just a question of police action. This is a question of the mindset of that BJP government, which has no answers - and that's why it's turning the police into a weapon to evade accountability. The BJP government should understand this - questions don't stop with batons. You can't snatch away someone's future by instilling fear," he said.

The students of Bihar will keep asking questions. And now, it's not just answers they want-- they demand accountability, he added.

Rahul's remarks came as a number of students were injured on Tuesday as police resorted to baton charge and lobbing tear gas shells at them to prevent them from marching to the Chief Minister's residence.

The protesters were demanding changes to the format of Teacher Recruitment Examination, transparency in competitive examinations, ending alleged discrimination against Hindi-speaking candidates in exams held by Bihar Public Service Commission and a high-level probe into previous controversies related to exams.
