Tehran-Muscat deal not enough to reopen Strait of Hormuz, Baghaei says

The Strait of Hormuz has not been closed due to a disagreement
between Iran and Oman that could be resolved through an agreement
between Tehran and Muscat, Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesperson
Esmail Baghaei said at a press conference in Tehran on August 10,
AzerNEWS reports.

"The reason for the closure of the Strait of Hormuz is the
military attacks by the United States and Israel against Iran, as
well as the provision of support for attacks on Iran from bases
located along the southern shores of the Persian Gulf," Baghaei
stated.

He noted that, in this context, determining a shipping route
between Iran and Oman is naturally a bilateral issue. Baghaei added
that any agreement concerning the Strait of Hormuz would inevitably
have implications for international shipping involving other
countries. However, he stressed that the discussions are bilateral
talks between the two littoral states and are being conducted with
a specific objective.

"The war situation is currently continuing. Under UN General
Assembly Resolution 3314, a naval blockade is considered an act of
aggression. As long as the U.S. naval blockade against Iran and
other violations by the United States continue, it cannot be said
that conditions have been created for the Strait of Hormuz to
become a safe shipping route," an official emphasized.

He also added that further steps could be discussed once the
United States fulfills the obligations it has undertaken and
compensates Iran for the damage caused.
